Iowa State University
Society for Theriogenology Club 2013
On Thursday October 31st, Dr. Walter Threlfall
visited Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine and spent time
over the lunch hour lecturing to the students of the Society for Theriogenology
Club and AAEP (equine club) about his knowledge and experience in equine
obstetrics. He discussed the equipment and procedures that have worked well for
him when presented with dystocia cases (including many different animal species
examples). He also provided a multitude
of tips and pointers for us, as future practitioners, to consider when we are
presented with similar cases in the future. He discussed the practical
application of performing epidurals in horses and how this procedure has worked
well for him in his career. We learned about the different presentations that a
neonate can display when close to parturition and how to correct for some of
these difficult presentations (i.e. breech). Dr. Threlfall also discussed
surgical options such as performing a C-section if necessary or a fetotomy.
Most importantly he stressed the importance of the human animal bond and how
vital communication is to maintain with the owner during the entire process, no
matter what the outcome is.
